We’ve been getting some slack about not having reviewed this monumental June 2 release. Jay Stay Paid is the latest posthumous work from the great J Dilla. It has been three years since the cherished producer’s passing. Three years that without a doubt would have proved even more progression and astonishing productions from the thirty two year old Detroit native.

Jay Stay Paid is yet another reminder of how true the above statement remains. The album consists of 28 previously unreleased tracks thoughtfully arranged by Pete Rock and JD’s ever supportive mother Maureen Yancey, better known as Ma Dukes. The albums track list is a compilation of older tracks found on Dilla’s disks and DATs as well as some haunting tracks created during some of his early stays in the hospital. The album is mostly made up of tantalizing instrumentals but does feature a few collaborative tracks with MC’s such as Black Thought of The Roots, Doom, Raekwon, and more. This album is also composed to resemble a radio show, and contains snippets of a real interview with JD himself.
Thankfully with this album we are graced one more time with some more insight into the undeniable musical ability of James Yancey. Jay Stay Paid is nothing short of a great and necessary album, and is a gift for both hip-hop and the entire realm of music.
