Last night at The Bowery Ballroom, I got a chance to see the lovely Meaghan Smith perform. The Canadian singer/songwriter recently released her EP A Crickets Quartet, and has been on the road with Eric Hutchinson for the past 5 weeks. The packed house at the Ballroom was able to catch the tail end of their tour, and Meaghan truly wowed the crowd with her vocal stylings that resemble musicians of time’s past – think Doris Day and Peggy Lee, with a 2008 twist.

She brings present day into the mix by incorporating electronic turntables and sampling from DJ’s, spinning standard big band and jazz on it’s head and perhaps slipping it into a whole new sub-genre. After hearing the song “A Little Love” featuring the awesome Kid Koala, I was sold on this folk-pop-jazz-infused gal’s tunes. Her new album is available for digital download here. Get at it!
