THE SOUNDS OF GAMING

by greg dybec

There is no doubt that video game trailers have been introducing some pretty interesting music lately. All you need to do is sit down in front of a TV for a few minutes before coming across a commercial for a new game that is as musically enticing as it is visually. It seems this marketing ploy gone right has given exposure to quite the attractive collection of songs.

It has always worked for a war theme to collaborate with distressed melodic music. It gives a sense of passion amongst a horrific background. Gears of War 2 proves that even in the heat of futuristic battle the same powerful tunes will work just fine to add intense feeling as well as rack up some sales. The Denver based indie rock group DeVotchka fulfills the duty of creating a powerful trailer with their song, How it ends.

Just like GOW2, the same goes for the latest Tom Clancy Game, EndWar. However here there is a blast from the past as the short trailer unfolds to the simple yet emotionally haunting cry of the 1960’s classic End of the World sang by Skeeter Davis.

Song: The End of the World

Gogol Bordello does the honors in this one. Their upbeat jam Wonderlust Kings escorts a group of racers as they jump out of planes while riding ATV’s and dirt bikes. This entertaining and funny trailer compliments the Gogol Bordello song as much as the song compliments the trailer. Definitely the perfect visuals for this more than eccentric group.

Ubisoft has unleashed its latest Prince of Persia game. This one has a whole new look and an entirely different story line. This games stunning commercial shows a compilation of some astounding action shots accompanied by the mystifying sounds of Saeglopur by Sigur Ros. This is definitely a captivating commercial, and much credit for that goes to the song choice.

Song: Saeglopur

An odd group of survivors, strapped to the teeth with a heavy duty arsenal of assault rifles, shotguns and more, is stranded in a city and ready to blow the decaying brains out of any zombie that crosses there path. Turn on the television right now and you will probably catch a glimpse of what I just described, all playing out to Steel Pole Bathtub’s Train to Miami. The lyrics “These are my friends now” give a sort of a comical yet hard hitting edge to the trailer for this new zombie thriller.

If you have seen the commercial for Mirrors Edge than you can’t deny that you are a little bit curious to what the game entails. Swedish pop star Lisa Miskovsky’s song Still Alive is the theme song for this groundbreaking and innovative first person action adventure.

Song: Still Alive

Mirrors Edge looks ridiculous. I wonder if the game play will be smooth.
