WKND SHOUT OUTS: HERE WE GO MAGIC / RJD2

by cory lesh

Friday props go to the phenomenal free show at Zebulon featuring Glass Ghost and Here We Go Magic. Despite getting there at 11, the place was surprisingly still penetrable. Glass Ghost showcased strong vocals, much improved from the last time I saw them in Summer of ‘09. Afterward, Here We Go Magic seemed to be testing out some new material as they played a host of uptempo, dare I say garage pop jams. Their version of “Tunnelvision” was sloppy but loud as hell, almost popping the Zebulon speakers.

The RJD2 show at Music Hall Of Williamsburg on Saturday night had a wild card quality to it. There’s no doubting RJD2’s DJ skills, but his newfound confidence in his live vocals and guitar playing made this show a roll of the dice. Thankfully RJ did a good job varying the show between his guitar songs and scratch tracks. The crowd was also extremely responsive and got down hard to all the cuts off of Ghostwriter. My personal highlight was the encore, an acoustic cover of the Labi Siffre song, “Making Days Longer.”
