THE HOUSE (& DUB) REPORT

by ND McCray

We’re back with another installment of The House (& Dub) Report. We’ll kick it off with an older release and work our way back to the present. Enjoy the bass..

Mark Pritchard and Om’Mas Keith / Wind It Up EP – (dubstep/grime) / Released 8/4/09

What do you get when you combine the talents of an Australian who loves techno and funk, and one-third of the experimental style called Sa-Ra?? You get some freaky shit!

Artist: Mark Pritchard & Om’Mas Keith
Song: Wind It U

.
Mark Pritchard
(aka Harmonic 313) and Om’Mas Keith (Sa-Ra Creative Partners) have teamed up to drop this deliciously funky yet seductive EP, Wind It Up (Hyperdub).

Sometimes remixes can be far better than the original track, however, the exception goes to “Wind It Up.”

Alix Alvarez / 5 Years of SOLE Channel Music – (house) / Released 11/26/09

I first became familiar with Alix Alvarez on last year’s remix of Barbara Tucker’s dance anthem “One Desire.” Now, the NYC-based DJ-producer releases 5 Years of SOLE Channel Music (Sole Channel), a 12-track disc that actually started out as a party on the Lower East Side of Manhattan with his musical partner Mr. V (Victor Font) in 2002.

Artist: Kaje feat. Sacha Williamson
Song: Butterflies (Guy Robin Remix)

.
Nonetheless, SOLE is a variety of sounds, ranging from soul and afrobeat to tech house and deep house. Faves: “Butterflies” by Kaje feat. Sacha Williamson, “Breakers Theme” and “I Can Sing” from Mr. V, and “The DJ” with Jolene mixed by Alix Alvarez. Quality stuff, no doubt.

Hudson Mohawke / Butter – (electro/experimental) / Released 10/26/09

Ross Birchard otherwise known as Hudson Mohawke is a 22-year old Scottish kid who’s putting down beats like he was born with 808s in his crib. Well, its not farfetched at all Hudson’s been making mixtapes since age 10, putting beats together on a friggin’ Playstation since 12, and even won the UK-version of the DMC championship at 14.

So it’s no surprise that Butter (Warp) is 18-tracks of basslines and R&B and hip hop and experimental shit that’ll make any mixmaster proud. Standout tracks: “Rising 5″ “Twistclip Loop” and “Zoooooom” however, if “Joy Fantastic” isn’t an ode to that purple brother from Erotic City, you can revoke my fan membership card!

Artist: Hudson Mohawke
Song: Joy Fantastic
