A FUN MONTH: NOVEMBER 2009 EDITION

by marissa bea

In keeping with the last More Art post of fun things to do in October, I have decided to create a separate post of the cool things coming up next month that everyone should check out. We’ll still have More Art posts too, so you kind of get a double dose of all things awesome. Here’s some of the great things coming up in November that you shouldn’t miss.

Artist: Bell
Song: Magic Tape
Artist: Primary 1
Song: Foaming (Memory Tapes Remix)

The Velvet Oratorio / Nov. 19th and 30th

This avant-modern show commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. With only 2 shows, at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, and Bohemian National Hall (on the respective dates), it’s a limited engagement. Plus it’s an original script with an original score, from the locally renowned Untitled Theater Company #61. Oh, and, it’s free!

Amy Grimm Blog Party / @ Glasslands Nov. 17th

Featuring the music of The Canon Logic, Right on Dynamite, Bottle Up and Go, Schocholautte, Dinowalrus, and the short films of Daniel Stedman. The show starts at 9pm, and I can’t imagine it could be a bad night with a list of superheroes like that on board.

“The Great Masters of Lithography” / @ fi:af Nov. 6th – Dec. 12th

This exhibition is showing vintage posters by artists like Matisse, Picasso, Chagall and many more. These artists mark an era of the re-emergence of lithography as a fine art. If you’re really feeling one of the pieces, some of the lithographs are actually for sale, but you have to contact Fi:af for that. The show itself is free to the public though.

Mia Riddle / @ Pete’s Candy Store Nov. 12th @ 8pm

Preceded by Medicine Woman Roots Ensemble, Puracane, and Social Studies

Have an indie night. Start out with Medicine Woman Roots Ensemble, a quartet of ladies armed with fiddles, flutes, cellos and voices; get a drink and stay for Puracane, a trip-hop/electronica group who have been around for 10 years; grab another drink and groove with Social Studies, indie rock all the way from San Fran on their East Coast tour (and they are really good). Finally, get down with Brooklyn-based Mia Riddle and her band, because it doesn’t get much more indie-awesome than them.

“The Art of Archie” / @ The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art / Opens Nov. 19th @ 6pm

Exactly as stated, this show celebrates the world of Archie Comics throughout the years. Do I really need to explain why you HAVE to see this?  Runs through February.

New Czech Films / @ BAM Nov. 18th – 22nd

Another great showing in celebration of Czech Independence Day. Over the course of 5 days there will be 7 new films, some having their North American premiere, while others are already acclaimed the world over. Each movie shows more than once, so you have lots of chances to get some culture this November!
