THE HOUSE (& DUB) REPORT: A LOOK BACK

by ND McCray

In this House (& Dub) installment we highlight some of the funkier dub releases of this past Summer. We touch on Chromeo’s latest and offer belated praise to Neil Landstrumm, Raffertie, and Peaches for their stellar ‘09 releases. Enjoy the report..

Chromeo / I Can’t Tell You Why – (DJ_KiCKS/electro-funk) / Released 9/15/09

I couldn’t pass on my favorite electro funksters from Canada, Chromeo. Them covering the Eagles “I Can’t Tell You Why” is classic Chromeo/DJ KiCKS (!K7).  With Chromeo’s synth-style of early 80’s disco, pop and R&B, and DJ KiCKS’ mixes, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Catch Chromeo at Irving Plaza, October 16, 8pm; after-party DJ set, Webster Hall, 11pm. Be there.

Artist: Chromeo
Song: I Can’t Tell You Why (DJ-KiCKS)

Neil Landstrumm / Bambaataa Eats His Breakfast – (techno) / Released 8/24/09

I’ll be honest with you, before today…matter of fact before a few hours ago, I’d never ever ever ever heard of Neil Landstrumm. With an album entitled Bambaataa Eats His Breakfast (Planet Mu), he definitely has my attention from here on out. A mainstay on the UK-electro scene since ‘94, Neil boasts a low frequency dubstep-techno-grime-experimental style. Influenced by everything from techno, garage, dubstep, beats and breaks, his mixes are a musical amalgamation. Think the sounds of Pacman meets “southern-fried krunk and dancehall” mixed with a plate of rave. Wild, right?? Standout tracks include “The Coconut Kestrel,” “How Do You Feel?,” and “Schlump Funk.”

Song: Schlump Funk

Raffertie / Wobble Horror! – (dubstep/grime) / Released 5/11/09

Planet Mu does it again! This time with a 21-year old Birmingham-native (London that is) DJ and producer, Raffertie. Wobble Horror! EP (Planet Mu) features the title track with its wonky and hard-hitting basslines (which is also included on The Mu School compilation) and “Sugar.” It’s filthy and grimey, man, just the way we like it! Even the Queen of Dubstep Mary Anne Hobbs (check Wild Angels review last week) is caught up in Raffertie’s style. She invited him to do a guest mix on her Radio 1 show, describing him as “as sick as they come.” Even “I’m getting sicker by the day.”

Peaches
/ I Feel Cream – (electro-clash) / Released 5/5/09

Who would have thought a former elementary school music and drama teacher could go on to make some of the most insanely ridiculous, sexually explicit electro music around? Well, Toronto-native Merrill Beth Nisker aka Peaches is that teacher. And I Feel Cream (XL Recordings) is that album (her 5th release). Not surprising, she plays her own instruments and produces the album along with Simian Mobile Disco, Soulwax, Digitalism and Drums of Death. Cream is unabashedly in-your-face. The music I mean… is heavy, hard, fun and rocking. Hot tracks include “Serpentine (I Don’t Give A…Pt. 2),” Talk To Me,” “Billionaire,” “Mud,” and “Relax.” Also, catch Peaches live at Terminal 5 on Nov 14 with another sharpshooter, Amanda Blank.

Song: Billionaire
