THE HOUSE (& DUB) REPORT

by ND McCray

Mary Anne Hobbs / Wild Angels – (dubstep/experimental) / Released 9/18/09

Mary Anne Hobbs is a pioneering English DJ and music journalist like myself (minus the pioneering, English and DJ part). Nonetheless, Ms. Hobbs is also the host of Radio 1’s hugely popular “Dubstep Warz” show, which is credited to breaking the dubstep movement. Wild Angels (Planet Mu) is a compilation of various sounds and artists. Yes, it’s dubstep and grimey but it’s also hiphop and soulful. The blend is. quiet. nice. Wild Angels is the third installment. Previous releases: Evangeline (2008) and Warrior Dubz (2006).

Kaskade / The Grand (Mixed) – (house/dance) / Released 4/9/09

Kaskade (Ryan Raddon) is one of my most favorite of house DJs, and he’s also the former A&R of OM Records, my most favorite record label. If you’ve never given your ears (or body) the pleasure of a live Kaskade DJ set, do! The Grand is a simple yet satisfying sampling. The Grand (Ultra) boasts classic Kaskade: smooth, flavorable and danceable remixes. Faves: “Step One Two” (Mischa Daniels Stringnized Mix), “Beestung,” “Imagination,” “Move For Me (Santiago and Bushido Mix), and “Saturday Night.”

Artist: Kaskade
Song: Step One Two (Mischa Daniels Mix)
