THE KORA RECORDS: FREDRIK & STRICKEN CITY

by pelly

November will bring two great international releases via DC label The Kora Records. Fredrik from Sweden is joined on the Kora roster by London band Stricken City, fronted by the savvy and enigmatic Rebeka Raa.  Both bands offer interesting twists on the indie pop sound and seem to be building on past success with the release of some new and dynamic tracks.

Fredrik drops soft melodic vocals alongside banjo, clarinet, cello and wind up music boxes in addition to your standard drums, guitar, and bass. The songs are interesting and melodic narratives worth listening to. The song “Black Fur” off Na Na Ni was one of my favorite morning / be happy tracks of last year. The new material also seems promising based on the warmly exotic beats in “Mujina/Locked in the Basement” off the upcoming album Trilogi which drops on November 17th.

Stricken City is fronted by savvy Rebekah Raa on vocals and Iain Pettifer on guitars. We first came across them when QC London liaison Daniella Kallmeyer (The Fashion Show) was a classmate of Raa’s at the London College of Fashion. During that period, Stricken City played multiple tour dates including some with Love Is All and Ra Ra Riot. Their buzz is finally making its way to the states and is well deserved. Their Kora debut releases in the U.S. on November 3rd and is titled Songs About People I Know.
