So did you do anything cool over the weekend? I don’t know, maybe a certain sweaty but mind blowing fundraiser on Friday? How about spending your time with some Sirens on Saturday? It’s the heart of the summer, and as someone once said, the heat is on. Man oh man, where to begin. How about the beginning? Lots of news to digest, but that’s why I’m here. We have some great new tracks from Julian Plenti, Kid Sister, Atlas Sound featuring Noah Lennox, Kurt Vile, The Dodos and a very special little single from My Toys Like Me. Needless to say, I hope you are ready. The Reel is off and rolling.

Wishing the best to MCA
Before the Reel truly kicks off, I heard Beastie Boy Adam Yauch announced he had cancer. It’s in the early stages and located in the parotid (salivary gland). Here’s hoping to a speedy recovery.

Sufjan Stevens Has Spent Time Stuck in Traffic on the BQE
Oh the BQE, such a love/hate relationship, it is only fitting someone would gain inspiration from it. That piece of highway that stretches between Brooklyn and Queens has provided easy access between boroughs as well as numerous headaches. Sufjan Stevens obviously sees the beauty in it and will release The BQE on Asthmatic Kitty on October 20th.The BQE is a collaborative effort of Stevens, photographer Reuben Kleiner , over 30 band members, and five hula dancers. The video made its debut at BAM’s Next Wave Festival in 2007 and will get the full treatment here, including a 40-page booklet, the album, as well as a cool Viewmaster reel (yes, like those ones that you had as a kid).
You can also catch a screening of the DVD with an introduction by Stevens and the Osso Quartet playing selections off of Run Rabbit Run on October 24th at 92Y Tribeca. Check out the trailer below.
Don’t be Scared of These Monsters of Folk
Consisiting of Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, and M. Ward, the collaborative effort began way back in 2004, but due to each member being successful and creating great music, timing and getting everyone together had to be an issue. Luckily, things worked out and will release their debut album on September 22nd. If you want to get a taste of what this band sounds like, head over to MonstersofFolk.com and say “Please”. Full tracklist below.
