THE HOUSE & DUB REPORT

by ND McCray

The dub and house scenes have long been a staple of European club culture, but overtime (like all things) they make their way to New York. QC dub reporter ND McCray breaks down some newer releases from the house and dub scenes to further acquaint us with these beat conductors. Miss Kittin and The Hacker, Tiga, Beat Pharmacy, and Caspa make the cut this week. See what strikes you.

Miss Kittin and The Hacker, First Album (2009 Reissue) (electro/techno)
Released Jun 16, 2009

Miss Kittin (Caroline Herve) is a French DJ/Producer with a filthy ass mouth. The Hacker (Michel Amato) is just along for the ride (okay, he’s a DJ as well). But they do work well together. With lyrics like “Suck my d***, lick my a***” from their club anthem “Frank Sinatra” from their disc, First Album (Nobody’s Bizzness), which was released in 2001, no wonder she’s still killing decks across Europe. Basically, the album is about sex but laced with hot electro and new wave beats.

Tiga, Ciao! (electroclash)
Released Jun 2, 2009

Something in Canada’s waters is birthing hard-hitting, bass-thumping, ridiculously-talented electro artists (read: Thunderheist, Chromeo, A-Trak), and Tiga James Sontag a.k.a. DJ/producer Tiga is at the reigns. Ciao (Last Gang), his latest mix of campy electro techno has dance floors rocking, especially “Beep Beep Beep” and “Shoes” and my favorite, “Sex O’Clock”.

Beat Pharmacy, Wikkid Times Remixes
Released Jun 2, 2009

If you want some chill down tempo to relax to this weekend, Beat Pharmacy, a South African DJ living in New York mixes the sounds of dub, house, techno, and afro beat on Wikkid Times Remixes (Deep Space Media) so precisely, you may never leave the house. Quick note: he’s known to DJ at a few spots in NYC. So, check out “Hope & Frustration (Quantec Remix),” my favorite and “Ghostship (Deadbeat Dub),” kind of eerie but it works!

Caspa, Everybody’s Talking, Nobody’s Listening (dubstep)
Released Mar 9, 2009

Winner of Beatport’s 2009 “Best Dubstep Artist” award, Caspa a.k.a. Gary McCann is one-half of the West London duo, Caspa and Rusko. Trust, after one listen to his album, Everybody’s Talking, Nobody’s Listening (Sub Soldiers/Fabric), everyone will be forced to listen. It’s full-on grime and nastiness for your ears. Check for “The Takeover” and “Rat-A-Tat Tat” featuring Dynamite MC, and “I Beat My Robot”.
