What is good party people? So, I hear the rumor on the streets is that young cats, like myself and you, loyal reader, dig festivals. Well, if that’s the case, we must have died and gone to heaven last weekend. You had Bonnaroo for those who seriously wanted to party and Northside Festival for those who only wanted to party locally or could not afford to party hardy. To top it off, Regina Spektor and Metric both play Manhattan tonight. But enough chatter, let’s get the Reel rolling.

Headbangers Unite
When you hear Daft Punk is in charge of producing new music videos, you should be pretty excited. The first video from this endeavor is a scorcher. Douglas Amour’s “Flushed and Flamelike, Themselves” gets the treatment by director Bryce Kass. The song has a great rolling riff, steady drum work and dream-like vocals. It’s a soothing rhythm that is reminiscent of Built to Spill. The video is lush in its forests and mountain locales. Great usage of slow-motion and lighting, the video is a pleasure to watch. And headbanging. Lots of headbanging. Sometimes headbangers need to be by themselves, headbanging the pain away. Simply a gorgeous video and I’m eagerly anticipating the next in the series.
Pop Montreal Rocks
There seems a recurring theme of a festival making me want to travel from the safety of our borders into the vast unknown. Pop Montreal is the latest festival to do that which just unveiled their headliners and a couple of other confirmed acts. Starting on September 30 and ending October 4, you can check out Fever Ray, Butthole Surfers, Dinosaur Jr, Lou Barlow and the Missingmen, Diamanda Galas, Faust, Os Mutantes, Tobacco, tUNE-YaRdS, Destroyer, Chairlift, Matt and Kim, Loudon Wainwright III and many more yet to be announced.
The festival gets a spiritual boost when the Dali Lama visits the Bell Centre on October 3. The are plenty of other activities that coincide with the musical fest including a crafts fest, a movie fest, and an art fest. Visit PopMontreal.com for all the details.
Speaking of Os Mutantes, they just signed a three record with Anti-Records and will release a new studio album, their first in over 30 years, come this fall.
Doveman Comes to Town
Doveman has a unique way of morphing anything he touches into something beautiful, just check out his take on Footloose. He has a show coming up this Thursday at Le Poisson Rouge (which the New York Times views as the coolest venue going in NYC) where he will be helped with members of The National. So what are you waiting for? Tickets can still be had. Thanks to Brooklyn Vegan, we also have a new song from Doveman, “Hurricane”.
Sonic Youth and the Merry Pranksters
I have probably covered this song and this band a little too much of late. But that’s ok, because it just keeps getting better and better. Sonic Youth just released the official video for first single “Sacred Trickster” and it is an interesting. Follow three girls on a mission and see the results below.
Get Your Solar Eclipse On with Boredoms
If you have $1,700 just up for the taking, Boredoms have a way for you to spend it. The band is set to play on a cruise line for three days coinciding with a complete solar eclipse on July 22. Gang Gang Dance is also on the bill. Check out the full report here and get ready to get your eclipse on.
The News can be Strange Sometimes
►Check out this great little piece by the San Francisco Bay Guardian on Serge Gainsbourg.
►If you like to party hard and perhaps indulge in a bit of extracurricular nose activities, don’t head over to the UK. They have flashlights for those sorts of illegal activities. BBC UK has the full line.
