STATUE OF LIBERTY RE-OPENING

by greg dybec

To know what really goes on inside the head of a woman may be an unachievable task. Lucky for us, on July 4, we will be able to enter the mind of New York’s most iconic and sexy female inhabitant. I’m talking about the overseer of New York harbor, the one and only Lady Liberty. And when I say we will be able to enter her mind, I mean literally.

Artist: Of Montreal
Song: Wicked Wisdom

Starting July 4 Lady Liberty and her crown will be open to the public for the first time since September 11, 2001. On May 8 Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, announced this news in a dramatic fashion from the Crown of the Statue. In August of 2004 Liberty Island was reopened, though the huge copper statue remained off limits. So this upcoming Independence Day us Americans will no longer be banned from our most precious symbol of freedom. All 354 steps will be yours to roam. It will be interesting to see whether this re-opening will be as powerful as some hope, or will it just be another activity to cross off of a long “To Do” list?

They say that this monumental day has come at the perfect time. It makes me wonder if it has come at the most ironic of times. A time where the haunting words of Emma Lazarus’ “The New Colossus” that lay inscribed on the pedestal of Lady Liberty can be directed as much towards us Americans as it was to the countless immigrants who touched upon our shores. They are words that seem to make just as much sense now as they did in the past. I guess it is just the big lady’s way of welcoming us back in the chaos of 2009.

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
