INDIE NEWS REEL: WKEND EDITION 5/2

by charles poladian (pains pic by pavla kopecna)

Unfortunately, not every weekend can be like last weekend. It’s going to start raining a lot, but hopefully that does not deter too many people from going out. Not only is it the start of the summer concert swing, it’s also the beginning of summer movies! Wolverine or Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past are out this week which…well, yeah, let’s stick with music. Some new tunes from Dinosaur JR, a cool collaboration between GZA and the Black Lips, and finally an interesting remix from Home Video. Let’s unspool this thing.

Artist: Black Lips & GZA
Song: The Drop I Hold
Artist: The Naked Hearts and Home Video
Song: Only For You Remix
Artist: Dinosaur Jr
Song: I Want You To Know

Violens’ “Already Over” Remixed into George Michael

Interesting little take on the song and video by Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek, takes a fascinating approach to morphing this song into a breezy nostalgia trip. Using four different low-res internet versions of George Michael, shot and reframed in out of focus HD, and you get this hazy beauty of a video.

Little Boots Is “New In Town”

Little Boots seems to be getting a lot of publicity of late.  This pop ditty “New In Town” is her latest and follows a very pop formula with some crafty lyrics. I’m still not sure on this one, but see for yourself. Watch Little Boots make her way in downtown Los Angeles with the help of her friends.

Sonic Youth’s Still Got It

If the previous track “Sacred Trixster” did not convince you, this performance on Jools Holland should quell any fears. “What We Know” is very accessible, with some standout distorted guitar solos. Chaotic, brash, yet structured, this band continues to blend the perfect marriage of dissonance and craft.

Calvin Harris Remixes “The Reeling”

Not as full bore ahead as the original, the remix scales it back in the vocal department. It’s still busy as hell, with plenty of pop and edge. Love that synth and bass line.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart in Person

I know I just covered this band’s video for “Young Adult Friction”, but we here at QC love live music. Speaking of live music, did you hear about the cool showcase on the 7th with pow wow! and darlings? Well, this one is from The Pains of Being Pure At Heart’s set in February at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. At a full twenty-two minutes, if this does not whet your appetite, nothing will.
