This week’s More Music brings together all sorts of different genres, so you can pretty much find anything to suit your aural pleasure. This week’s installment is packed with homestyle Brooklyn goodness from right around the corner. Variety is the spice of life, so I thought I’d cook you up something nice for the week ahead. Pick a favorite and get yourself to the beach with it. Already a champion of the blog ranks, John Vanderslice’s “Too Much Time” is an instant classic and kicks off this week’s edition of More Music (we didn’t post on until now) Volume 17.

John Vanderslice – Romanian Names
The newest body of work from the infamous John Vanderslice, Romanian Names, is set to release May 19th, and he will be playing the Music Hall of Williamsburg and Bowery Ballroom on June 12th and 13th respectively, alongside The Tallest Man on Earth. Soothing melodies co-mingle with his epic storytelling abilities, and I immediately felt like I was driving alone through the southwest, towards a beautiful sunrise, with only opportunities on the horizon. The man’s a living legend.

Ólöf Arnalds – 2nd Album TBA
First Iceland gave us Björk, and now we have Ólöf. Alongside Björk and the Dirt Projectors, Arnalds will be playing a benefit show at the Housing Works on May 8th, preceded by three days of performances starting on May 5th, at Union Hall, Sycamore, and Scandinavia House, respectively. She has also finished recording a second album, which we will only assume, shall be a big deal and wanted by everyone.

Tiny Masters of Today – Skeletons
Skeletons hits stores June 16th, written, produced, recorded and everything by the brother-sister, Brooklyn duo, done entirely with GarageBand. That’s how you make a low budget album folks. They have been critically acclaimed for a few years now, and are still gaining fans all over the place. They’ll be playing Mercury Lounge on June 3rd with Art Brut. The clincher? These two can’t even drive yet.
[Editor's Note: I saw these kids open for YYY in 2007 and was pretty impressed.]

Emanuel and the Fear – Self Titled EP
These folks were listed as one of The L Magazine’s eight NYC bands you need to listen to, they have an upcoming self-titled EP, and will be playing in the Northside Festival, June 11-14th. Pretty darn good for the group from Brooklyn of almost a dozen members. Catch them live at Mercury Lounge too, on May 23rd, and keep your ears open for their name in the future.

Wooden Birds – Magnolia
Barsuk, home of some of the greatest bands of the contemporary scene, including Death Cab for Cutie, and the Starlight Mints, also brings us another great one. They’re on a short West Coast tour in late May through early June, and in Europe before that, so if you’re out that way, catch them! Their debut album, Magnolia, comes out May 12th, and Barsuk knows music, so if they’ve put faith in them, then their potential is probably amazing.

Vagabond Opera – The Zeitgeist Beckons
The album comes into stores May 9th, and might I say, I have every intention of buying it, the day it comes out. Who doesn’t want to send themselves through a glamorous time-warp? Accordions, silk stockings, opera, 1930s cabaret, all coming straight from Portland, Oregon in a mix of sexy storytelling and bewitching musical arrangements. Phenomenal, in every way.
