HYPE FILTER VOL. 6: IT WAS ALL A DREAM

by kevin diamond

Last night I had a dream that I was playing a gig. Before we could start, I had to replace a broken string on my guitar. The string I held in my hand was golden, and glistened in my hands. To get to the guitar, I had to traverse many obstacles: Mudslides, monsters, nudity, ukuleles. The crowd was growing impatient. Golden string in my hand, I finally reached my goal, but before I could play my set, the crowd got up and left the auditorium.

What do you think it means?

Artist: DD/MM/YYYY
Song: Infinity Skull Cube

DD/MM/YYYY is one of the harder band names to figure out how to pronounce, after Sunnnn0))))) and !!!. For the record, it’s apparently pronounced Day/Month/Year or Date/Month/Year depending on who you ask. Infinity Skull Cube s a tune of time changes and grooves, yelped vocals and fun licks.

Artist: volcano!
Song: Africa Just Wants To have Some Fun

volcano! take much of the same African inspiration that was made popular by Paul Simon, and later, Vampire Weekend. But unlike Vampire Weekend, volcano takes their cues less verbatim. The rhythms and guitars are there, but added to the mix is a post-punk/mathrock ability to play with time and undercut expectations. It’s a really interesting amalgamation of styles and sensibilities that comes off really well

Artist: Japandroids
Song: Young Hearts Spark Fire

Japandroids are a little noisy, a little lo-fi, a little bar band. This song has a nostalgia to it, a dash of melancholia, and a blunt edge. With chords that sound like The Hold Steady played on headphones underwater, a chanting call and response vocal, a Phoenix-like drum beat, there’s a lot of emotion on this track, though it’s obscured and kept at a distance.

Artist: Jeremy Jay
Song: In This Lonely Town

A rockabilly swing keeps this tune by Jeremy Jay afloat. Reverb drenched vocals, cleanly strummed acoustic guitar, and a crisp drum beat add flavor. An synth line comes in and stirs the pot, but it’s not overpowering...

Artist: USAISAMONSTER
Song: Cocaine Wedding

USAISAMONSTER are calling it quits this month after years of riding around Brooklyn like the town bicycle. This two man band packs a lot of punch, and its a shame to see them go. Their last show is May 9th at Market Hotel, so make sure you’re there.

Artist: Screaming Females
Song: Bell

Screaming Females do very little that I would consider new or innovative. But what they do, they do well. Crunchy guitar lines, powerful female lead and backing vocals, and a punk aesthetic. And they’ve got a lot of energy and nice chops. I’m sold.

Artist: Mika Miko
Song: I Got A Lot (New New New)

I’ve been listening to this track by Mika Miko for about a month now, and finally I find a spot for it in a Hype Filter post. How many things I love about this track: the bass line first and foremost, so rubbery and fun. The Joan Jett vocals. It’s short, sweet, delicious, retro, and fun.

Artist: Flying
Song: Body

A friend turned me onto Flying’s MySpace, and I really enjoy what they’re doing with sound and layers. They can be straightforward when they want to be, and they can be messy and disjointed the next second. Their dynamic shifts are really exciting too. Its not your Grunge style quiet-loud-quiet formula, more like flashes of lightning on an otherwise quiet night. So much tension and release, you’re liable to ask for a happy ending when it’s done.

Artist: Box Elders
Song: Hole In My Head

The Box Elders sound like they should be included on the Nuggets compilation. Psychedelic and Garage sounds, with a classic girl group style melodies and a lo-fi production. I guess it’s a story you’ve heard before, but a good story is a good story, and a good song is a good song, and so there. If you’re a fan of Black Lips, you’ll enjoy this track

Artist: Antlers
Song: Two

The Antlers have been on people lips for a while. I find it hard to get through their entire album, but this, the final track, I could listen to over and over again for days. It’s like this song knows exactly what I want moments before I do, it pushes the right buttons in the right order. It’s like the first month of an exciting new relationship. In about six months we’ll be sick of each other.
