THE SHIVERS: IN THE MORNING

by apex

The Shivers return with another new album titled In the Morning which was officially released today. Front man Keith Zarriello is a music purist, which is represented definitively by the raw and lo-fi style of the new tracks. It’s also the reason why The Shivers now operate as a duo made up of Keith and keyboardist Joanne Schornikow. The record was recorded on a 4-track cassette deck in a  windowless room under the Queensboro Bridge. Zarriello comments that the process involved “No computers. No hired guns. No Nonsense.”

Artist: The Shivers
Song: Just Didn’t Need To Know

I stand by my claim that The Shivers track catalog is one of the most impressive, extensive, and under appreciated collections in rock. Keith Zarriello is a phenomenal guitarist whose far removal from electronicized indie pop supports his identity as one of the truly authentic musicians and song writers in Brooklyn.

The new record also gives Jo the opportunity to shine. Having recently acted in and scored (with Justin Rice from Bishop Allen) the independent film Alexander the Last. She’s developed a growing confidence best exhibited by the track “Cold In the Morning.”

It’s too early for me to categorize the album in any way. But what can be confirmed is that The Shivers are an endless well of thought provoking riffs and lyrics. They continually release new music annually, in spite of not receiving the buzz and following they deserve.

The group exemplifies a full commitment to passion and the valued output which results. The respect and appreciation may not be tangible monetarily, but it exists in a universal sense and continues to drive the music forward. Zarriello deserves the freedom to perpetually write music, without fear of financial restrictions. In this dramatic avalanche of technologically assisted sound, Brooklyn needs this music.
