THE QC LIVE GUIDE: APRIL 15 - 21

by neil roberts

For the past week I’ve been meditating every morning, first thing when I wake up. It’s helping create a clarity through which creativity freely flows. The winds of change are blowing through the newly blooming trees. Here’s something a draftsman I know sent me today about change. Be sure to check out our show recommendations, and change up the week you thought you were going to have.

“An analysis of the history of technology shows that technological change is exponential, contrary to the common-sense ‘intuitive linear’ view. So we won’t experience 100 years of progress in the 21st century-it will be more like 20,000 years of progress (at today’s rate). The ‘returns,’ such as chip speed and cost-effectiveness, also increase exponentially. There’s even exponential growth in the rate of exponential growth. Within a few decades, machine intelligence will surpass human intelligence, leading to the Singularity-technological change so rapid and profound it represents a rupture in the fabric of human history. The implications include the merger of biological and nonbiological intelligence, immortal software-based humans, and ultra-high levels of intelligence that expand outward in the universe at the speed of light.”

Artist: Tune-Yards
Song: Jumping Jack

WEDNESDAY 4/15: The Tallest Man On Earth, Red Cortez @ Bowery Ballroom ($13)
Sweedish Folkster Kristian Matsson puts on an a “deeply felt passionate heartelt performance” -my friend Tommy Wilderban who saw him last week in San Fran.

THURSDAY 4/16: Tune Yards, Sister Suvi, Ladyfingers, Afuche @ Bruar Falls (new venue)
Tune Yards should always been seen when she’s playing. Merril Garbus recorded her whole album on a digital voice recorder and then put it all together using free software she downloaded. I just found out she is also the singer in Sister Suvi who’s also playing Thrs, and I’ve been listening to them all night long. She’s the reason I bought my ukulele, and I listen to BirdBrains at least four times a week.

THURSDAY 4/16: The Walkmen, Beach House, Wild Light @ Webster Hall ($20)
I’ve seen the Walkmen 3 times, and they are an awsome fucking rock band, they prove that shit aint dead. I really really want to see them play the tracks from You and Me live. Beach House should open for everyone.

FRIDAY 4/17: The Juan Maclean, Black Meteoric Star @ Le poisson rouge ($15)
This is the Dance Show of the week and you probably didn’t dance enough this week. The Juan Maclean is a co-founder of DFA.

FRIDAY 4/17: Beyondo, East West Quintet, Nook, Papercranes @ Spike Hill
We discovered Beyondo late one night. Try it, I would be suprised if it didn’t make you smile.

SATURDAY 4/18: Wild Card Show - Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum @ Bowery
This is not really a pick. It’s Dungeon and Dragon prog rock. But there are a lot of hipster nerds out there, you know who you are.

SUNDAY 4/19: New York Howl, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Gentleman Auction House @ Public Assembly
I been loving, Cymbals Eat Guitars “Why are there Mountains”. Throw a bunch of genres in a blender and add all sorts of unexpected hooks and intrumetal turns and you have a milkshake for the making for what I predict to be a great live show

MONDAY 4/20: All day free concert in your mind. Happy Holidays

[Editor's note: Lily Allen plays Roseland Ballroom on 420 but Neil was too cool to suggest it]

TUESDAY 4/21: Ratatat, Tussle, Black Pus Terminal 5 ($23)
The tat is known for their psychadelic light shows and visualizations. I feel like this show comes just one day too late.
