QC GIVEAWAY: THE BPA ON VINYL

by krissie

We got a nice giveaway for the kids this week and it requires some reminiscing. This weeks prize is a copy of I Think We’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat, the February release from The BPA, aka Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim. It’s packed with guest spots including Iggy Pop, Martha Wainwright, David Byrne, Dizzee Rascal, and Lateef. The BPA stands for The Brighton Port Authority. Cook switched to the new moniker last May while he was producing this album. It’s a sweet vinyl with a cover dawning a stack of old school audio tapes so here’s your task if you want to win the record:

Tell us the first music tape you remember buying along with it’s relating memory/anecdote. We’ll pick our favorite and get you the vinyl if you’re selected. Leave your entry in the “Comments” section and put down a valid email so we can contact the winner. Thanks to bigMethod for the prize. Full track list after the jump. Here’s “Toe Jam,” the David Byrne/Dizzee Rascal track..

Artist: David Byrne & Dizzee Rascal

The first cassette I ever bought was the soundtrack to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. I bought it not having any idea what was on it — I think it was before the movie came out. The bizarre result is that I was exposed to rap and hip-hop (or anything other than rock and pop) before any of my friends and took to liking it before they did. The relevant result was that it probably had a hand in making Better Living Through Chemistry one of my first CD purchases.

This is embarrasing but the first tape I remember getting is by the female R&B group Xscape. It was for their single off the soundtrack for the Mask .. To this day, I bet you that song is pure flavor!!!

    Anything for love (of meatloaf)…

My first tape was bat out of hell 2 by meatloaf… At that point, the song that went “I would do anything for love” was on top of the charts (?) and I made a private oath to myself to know all the words so I could serenade my secret crush, amie bentley, on “Walkman day” in 2nd grade… The result? mrs miles checked everybody’s tape to make sure they were second grade appropriate, and while kids were on a fantastic voyage with coolio, I was being escorted to the principals office for a “bat out of HELL.” the next week I hit amie bentley in the ear with a kickball. Dream crushed. Thanks meatloaf. :(

The first cassette tape I remember buying was Bruce Springsteen’s The River. I was 13 and disco was still king, but I was starting to notice songs that had great lyrics in addition to the beat. I had never heard of Springsteen before, but one morning my clock radio came on with Springsteen’s “Fade Away.” All day long “Fade Away” kept replaying in my head. I knew I had to own it. So I rushed out later to buy it. From that purchase I became acquainted with such classics as “Hungry Heart” “Cadillac Ranch” “I’m a Rocker” and, of course, my fave “Fade Away.” I think I learned more about life from that double cassette than I did in class that year. I played that cassette until it was eaten by my cassette player.
