Wow. What a night. Going from The Trail Of Dead show to the Soft Black release at Death By Audio was quite tricky. Two completely different shows. Having felt like I was on a lot of crack seeing Trail of Dead, the Soft Black show made me feel very stoned, which I may or may not have been. To start off, Vincent Cacchione from Soft Black has had quite the varying music career. spanning from playing in North Jersey punk bands (The Clicking Attaches and the notorious Give Us Barrabbas) to the Beatles-like band The Perfect Gentlemen, to Hearts On Fire and now, Soft Black, which consists of Vin’s best songs to date. For a while, Vin played solo gigs for a while, but now has been sporting a back-up band. Now that the history is out of the way, I’ll talk to you about the show.

Death By Audio is a great space for shows; lots of room, cheap beers, and even a place to smoke. The notable Adam Green was the DJ for the night and the first band that I caught was Werewolves, who share the same label with Soft Black, Plays With Dolls Records. Werewolves can be put into the shoegaze genre like many bands that have been turning up lately, but with a touch of The Velvet Underground in them. They played all new songs that will be on their upcoming debut LP. Overall, they played a pretty good set, despite the unnecessary amount of effects that were heard in the vocals and keyboard at times.
It was around 1:40 am or so when Soft Black started their set and the place was packed. I want to say there were a good 60 people or so who stayed. Vin and company went through a bunch of songs from “The Earth Is Black” LP which was recently released. Soft Black is a great mix of folk, grunge, and pop. They opened with the album-titled track, “The Earth Is Black” and played my two favorite songs, “The Animal” and “Did You Put A Spell On Me?” After seeing Soft Black a number of times this past year, I can safely and confidently say that this was their best performance. What made it even greater was that the kids new a lot of the songs and the ones they didn’t know still made them move their heels and hips. Do me and the band a favor and go see them as soon as you can.
