City Winery in downtown Manhattan on Varick & Vandam is the X that solves my favorite equation: Music + X = AMAZING. In the case of this venue, X = wine. The place recently opened under CEO Michael Dorf who also founded the Knitting Factory and Knit Media. It is beautiful. There is a wine cellar downstairs and the upstairs houses a restaurant and fully equipped stage. There seems to be four parts to the operation; wine, food, music & cheese. Wine is defiantly the star. Waiters are more like wine stewards who help you select food that goes with your wine. Musical guests are chosen as pairings for the wine. For example, an event on March 3rd features the jazz of Michael Blake to accompany your libations. The venue is booking some big names, Medeski Martin & Wood played last week and Rufus Wainwright is coming up next week. Some nights include a ticket cover price while some music comes with. See www.citywinery.com for a full list of events. All you cheese heads will be happy, City Winery is partnered with famous Murray’s. There are also klezmer brunches. The venue really offers the best of wine, cheese and music on a classy downtown tray.

As a personally poor, yet spoiled by other peoples work expense accounts media planner, I do get to sample some of the best of NYC and of the best, these folks have it right. I left full of wine, feeling like I had swallowed a full moon and the moon’s glow shown through my eyes, ears and mouth. I highly recommend City Winery to anyone looking to tantalize his or her senses.

If music + X = Amazing then X = Amazing – music…I prefer to think X – music = chocolate milk.
