IRAN @ DEATH BY AUDIO

by kevin diamond

Death By Audio’s dilapidated home-room style is pretty key. Unpretentious and inviting, in that “there’s water leaking out of the bathroom, but who cares cause you can smoke inside” kind of way. It was a pretty perfect atmosphere to watch the seldom-seen Iran, a band i’d liken to a post-ironic Pavement for it’s ramshackle performance coupled with semi-serious lyrical delivery. Front man Aaron Aites summed it up best, after the plowed through their first song. “We don’t normally do this,” he said, lighting a smoke, “But here we are. Playing a show.”

Artist: Iran
Song: Buddy

The band is probably best known for it’s famous sometimes co-singer, Kyp Malone of TV On The Radio, who was beckoned to the stage after the first three or for songs. It’s strange to see six people on stage and only 4 of them are holding instruments. Kyp himself seemed a bit out of place without something to do with his hands, often mimicing Aaron’s nonchalance by stuffing them in his pockets. They were at times brash, loud and disjointed, and, at other times, disappointingly reserved. The reason they were playing Sunday night, and March 6th at Mercury Lounge, was ostensibly in support of their quietly-released new album Dissolver, which came out yesterday. But they never mentioned it.

Though we arrived too late to see opener Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, we did get to hear the last song of Pure Horsehair’s set, an ethereal and chilling acoustic number that had me checking out their MySpace page for more. After Iran, we were subjected to the horror of The Fakers, which drove us out of Death By Audio and around the corner to Glasslands, where we watched another band called The Fakers, this one involving electronic musician White WIlliams. Which leads to only one question: Which is the real Fakers and which is the fake Fakers? My guess is the one with White Williams is the real fakers, cause they didn’t suck quite as much.

Iran’s album’s been getting some good reviews, you can buy it on Amazon or iTunes, and see them play March 6th at Mercury Lounge or at SXSW.

Artist: Pure Horsehair
Song: Heads and Tails

PS: This is pretty great:
