The Volunteers have recently rolled into my musical bubble, and shit, they almost popped it. Their album Spectrophilia was released a couple of months ago, and has been receiving reviews that are mixed across the board. Blending simple yet edgy rock with fratty obnoxious content isn’t necessarily everyone’s bag. However, one watch of their video “Fck My Ghost” was all I needed to fall head over keg for The Volunteers. As for the album, it’s laced with hard rock patterns that don’t exactly break boundaries, but Spectrophilia still explodes with energy, fervor, and delightfully sophomoric lyrics. Another plus is that the album was recorded at Monsterland Studio in Brooklyn with Producer/Engineer Paul Mahajan who worked with TVOTR, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, and The National. That’s gotta count for something, right? If you need more convincing, they’ve hooked it up with a free download of their entire album here.
