Last night was a genre bender as a host of Miami musicians played the unofficial Art Basel welcoming party, Home Grown. The outdoor stage was accompanied by a duo of visual artists Lebo and Francesco Locastro whose paintings neared completion during Rachel Goodrich’s set of endearing melodies. Goodrich gave off the best vibe and attitude making it easy to enjoy oneself. Complete with tambourines, bass, a bass drum, and some whistling the emanating sounds were one of the many delights of the evening.

Marijuana scented air filled The Vagabond as an eclectic mix of people settled in for the evening. While Jesse Jackson and ArtOfficial also performed throughout the night, it was headliners The Spam All Stars who really shook the main room. Wrapping up their 10th year as a unit, these guys bring it on the live front. Orchestrated by DJ Le Spam, it’s a fusion of funk that gets your body in motion. And when drummer Tomas Diaz drops his Latin lyrics, game over. Despite sounding incredible at the show last night, Diaz threw down his mic in a fit of frustration saying “Fuck this shit!” towards the end of his lone song last night. It was pretty awesome yet sad since he didn’t sing anymore after that.
It should be noted that DJ A-Train provided the between set beats for the party and they were fresh as hell. I was also blown away by some impressive paintings hanging behind the main stage by Miami artist Amanda Valdes. This girl is awesome, check out her art here. Lastly, Rachel Goodrich’s debut album, Tinker Toys is available for sale on itunes, go through her website.
