SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL

by cheryl santa maria

What’s the deal with the banana, anyway?

For some reason, it’s considered to be iconic. Now before you start with your angry comments, let me be clear: I don’t mean any disrespect. The Velvet Underground has always been one of my favorites and the Banana Album is a great listen.

But as far as album art goes…well…as far as I’m concerned, it’s just a banana.

I WANT TO GROW UP TO BE A POLITICIAN BY THE BYRDS:

I’M WAITING FOR THE MAN BY THE VELVET UNDERGROUND:

Then again, I suppose that’s why I’m not an art critic. I don’t “get” art. Most of the time I find it confusing and it hurts my head.

Perhaps I need a little more education on the matter.

If that’s the case, I’m in luck. And if you plan on being in Montréal between now and January then you’re in luck, too.

Musee D’Art Contemporain de Montréal is currently hosting Sympathy for the Devil: Art and Rock and Roll Since 1967. The exhibition is comprised of over 100 separate pieces and it examines how art has influenced rock and roll (and vice versa) in New York, Los Angeles, the U.K., Germany, and the rest of the world.

It’s all there: the psychedelics of the 1960s, the Pinball Wizard, Teenage Fanclub, the Stones … and many, many installments dedicated Andy Warhol (and the beloved banana). There’s even an installation on Japanese artist Yoshimoto Nara.

If you find yourself in the area and you’re courageous (stupid?) enough to brave a Montréal winter go and check this out. I’m sure you’ll learn a thing or two.
