THIS IS NOT YOUR FATHERS SOAP BOX DERBY

by bmac

This Saturday – Sept. 6th – Red Bull brings it’s hilariously awesome Red Bull Soap Box Race to Philadelphia to take on “The Wall”, a famous (and crazy steep) hill in Manayunk. For those of you who were Boy Scouts (please don’t all stand up at once), you may remember a somewhat tame version of the soap box derby where kids rolled down a short hill in cookie cutter cars their dads built for them. As you can see in the above picture, these cars aren’t at all “cookie cutter”. That is unless someone slipped Martha Stewart some PCP.

STICKSHIFTS AND SAFETYBELTS BY CAKE:

The rules for this races are also a little different than the traditional version. From the Red Bull website…

Teams will be judged on three criteria: speed, creativity and showmanship. All soapboxes must be human powered meaning no engines or external energy sources allowed. Prefabricated cars are not accepted. All vehicles must be less than six-feet wide, less than 20 feet in length and no more than seven feet from the ground. All cars must weigh no more than 176 lbs. (not including the driver). Drivers must be at least 18 years old.

I personally can’t wait. It’s going to be an all day drunken ordeal and Manayunk is the perfect place to host it. Gates open at 11am and the first race kicks off at 1pm. See you there.

Chewbacca is pissed that the Sonics are moving to Oklahoma City.

Considering Philly has some of the most interesting characters/people on the planet, I look forward to seeing how nutty this could turn out to be. Thanks Redballs!
