QC NORTHSIDE SHOWCASE 6/24

by kate maxwell

The L Magazine’s Northside Festival begins next Thursday, June 24, showcasing more than 300 bands at dozens of venues in north Brooklyn over four days.  Quiet Color will be curating a show at Bar Matchless on the festival’s opening night and we’ve put together a spectacular lineup, including two bands from the L Mag’s 8 Bands You Need to Hear 2010 list.  Getting the night started will be Miniboone at 8:30pm, followed by SHARK?. Rounding out the night will be Ball of Flame Shoot Fire and ARMS.  That’s not it though– we have enlisted a VERY SPECIAL secret headliner  to go on at midnight and you’re just going to have to go to the show to find out who it is. We promise you will not be disappointed!  The cost of the show is $6, and bar Matchless is at 557 Manhattan Ave in Greenpoint. Full (sick) FLIER after the jump. See you there!

OFF TO BONNAROO

by ryan s

Another Bonnaroo is fast approaching and I’m happy to have started the drive south to Manchester, TN.  The most common question I get is “who are you most excited to see?”  Which makes me realize that this year I’m not driving toward a certain sound, I’ve become addicted to the unique experience that is Roo.  The bands are talented colored sprinkles on this creamy carousel of hippies, music adventurers, glassblowers, and carnies. I can’t afford health insurance or a psychiatrist, so I go to Roo.  My four days of therapy and disappearance from the trivial cell phone bills, car payments, and emails that fill the inbox.  It’s the perfect place to remember who and what you love, and that nothing else matters.

DEER TICK & DR. DOG @ TERMINAL 5

by Mike Schoeck

New York always seems to be the touring band’s home away from home, and as such, bands seem to always give their A-game. Philly’s Dr. Dog brought out all the staples of their latest timeless indie-pop-tinged classic rock, as featured on their first major-label effort, Shame, Shame, at their Saturday night show at Terminal 5 with Deer Tick.

BJORK ABOVE THE AUTO PARTS STORE

by kate max

It may have been the first overheated, sweaty dance party of 2010: on Sunday night Above the Auto Parts store was the place to be as Bjork (Yes, THAT Bjork) was DJing and dancing amongst the sweat-soaked crowd. At any given moment, you could have stepped on the the toes of the clown-inspired costume of the Icelandic musical goddess. She was smiling and mingling with other revelers including Questlove and the additional DJs of the night: Dave Longstreth, Tyondai Braxton, Alex Ross, and Brandon Stosuy. The music was an eclectic set of hip hop, electronic, and rock inspired mixes that kept the crowd going late. Bjork’s set was as interesting and intriguing as the artist herself, and it was truly a rare experience to listen to her work in such a small, DIY space. Check out the pic above which shows a bodega rubber baseball we got tagged by QuestLove and Bjork.

COACHELLA: DAY 3

by Scott Iasillo

Day 3 was the big one. The day that had the best acts, the best variety, and a less congested crowd. With all these good things comes the problem of missing certain sets. Do I catch Spoon and then try to make it in time for Sly Stone? Does Phoenix get more attention than Pavement? Mayer Hawthorne or De La Soul? What to choose? This is how I looked at it…

COACHELLA: DAY 2

by Scott Iasillo

Day 2, a day that really did not have the affirming promise of live acts as day 1 and day 3 gave me. With that said, I was extremely surprised at what I witnessed. Perhaps going into a music festival with no demanding expectations is the proper way to enjoy such a day. Here’s the breakdown:

COACHELLA: DAY 1

by Scott Iasillo

Coachella is amongst us folks, and in my 4th year at the Indio, California festival I felt it was necessary to witness all three days of music and art (mainly because they only sold 3-day passes). With that said, here’s a breakdown of the artists I caught on day 1,  including the likes of She & Him, LCD Soundsystem, and Jay-Z.

MTYMX: A REFLECTION

by kevin diamond

Much has been written about this past week’s Todd P Currated MTYMX Festival in Monterrey, Mexico. Some things fair, some unfair. I thought I’d take a moment, as someone who was personally involved in the festival, to express a few of my thoughts about the matter.
